FIVE NOTABLE DEVELOPMENTS IN NUCLEAR THIS WEEK

1. The department for business, energy and industrial strategy published a report on the market framework for financing small nuclear

The independent report from the Expert Finance Working Group on Small Reactors sets out a series of recommendations on how government, the nuclear and finance sector can work together to enable the advanced nuclear technologies market.

The key recommendations include introducing funding mechanisms such as Contracts for Difference, Power Purchase Agreements, or a Regulated Asset Base.

2. THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR BUSINESS, ENERGY AND INDUSTRIAL STRATEGY, GREG CLARK, VISITED SELLAFIELD

On Tuesday, Greg Clark MP, along with the NDA’s Chief Executive, David Peattie, visited the Cumbrian nuclear plant to witness the decommissioning work carried out there.

Greg Clark MP, said: ‘This important work is in huge demand around the world and our landmark Nuclear Sector Deal sets out how the government and the sector can work together to target this opportunity.’

3. THE DEPARTMENT FOR BUSINESS, ENERGY AND INDUSTRIAL STRATEGY OPENED A CONSULTATION ON THE CAPACITY MARKET AND EMISSIONS PERFORMANCE STANDARD

Five years since the legislation introducing the Capacity Market was passed, the Government is seeking views on its performance and any opportunities to ensure it remains fit for the future.

In the 2017 T-4 Auction 16% of the capacity market obligations were gained by nuclear.

4. MAGNOX PUBLISHED THE LATEST VERSION OF ITS PROCUREMENT PLAN

The publication for the month of July identifies awards, projects frameworks and call-offs greater than £100k for new and existing suppliers.

5. SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS WAS MADE AT SELLAFIELD’S MOST HAZARDOUS BUILDING

Sellafield Ltd announced that work to empty the Magnox Swarf Storage Silo (MSSS) will begin next year. A waste transfer package has been installed in the building for the first time meaning the 11,000m3 of waste can now be safely transferred into modern storage.
