The tourism industry is fundamental to economic growth in the UK and employs just under 3 million people, making up 5% of the UK workforce. England alone represents over 80% of the total UK tourist value, while London is one of the world’s leading international tourist destinations with overseas retail shoppers in the capital worth around £2 billion. With roughly 30 million overseas visitors a year, the industry generates approximately £34 billion annually in taxes and is the UK’s third largest export earner.

In light of key forthcoming events which present huge opportunities for the tourism industry, such as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Games in 2012, substantial investment and strategy planning is required for the industry to take full advantage of the first time UK visitors and promote Britain as one of the world’s top destinations. Building on the relationship with the core markets such as America and Europe is on the agenda, as well as targeting Chinese visitors, while opportunity for growth has also been identified in growing local tourism as a local industry. Therefore, despite competition from emerging markets and tax changes, such as the VAT increase, the tourism industry shows strong potential for long-term growth. The sector will have to work closely with the Government in order to fully exploit all opportunities for growth and maintain the success of the industry.
